What Foods Kill Testosterone?

For men, testosterone is perhaps the most important hormone of all. Sure, you can still function even if your levels of testosterone are low, but your functioning and performance would definitely be way below normal.

And you probably won’t feel much of a man at all, considering the fact that low testosterone levels destroy your sex drive and kill your erection. So if you don’t want that to happen, it’s best that you avoid these eight foods that kill testosterone.

#1 Soybeans and Soy Products

If you like adding soy milk to your cup of joe, you may want to switch to black coffee instead. Soy products and soybeans are rich in isoflavones, which is a good thing if you’re a woman. If you’re a man who’s suffering from declining testosterone levels, however, you should avoid anything that contains soy isoflavones.

One reason why soy isoflavones are so beneficial for women is that these compounds exhibit estrogen-like activities. For men, though, that could lead to a hormonal imbalance wherein your estrogen levels are higher than your testosterone levels.

#2 Alcohol

Drinking a glass of red wine may have some benefits for your heart health. But chronic alcohol consumption is a totally different matter altogether. Not only will your liver suffer from such copious consumption of alcohol, but your testosterone levels will be negatively affected too.

There are actually several reasons why you should limit your alcohol intake if you don’t want your testosterone levels to drop. For one, beer contains hops which can increase your estrogen levels.

Secondly, alcohol consumption is closely linked to increased aromatization of testosterone to estrogen. This means that the more alcohol you drink, the lower your testosterone levels will get since more of your testosterone will be converted to estrogen.

#3 Deli Meats

If you like eating a sandwich made with deli meats and cold cuts for your lunch, you might want to switch to a turkey sandwich instead. Deli meats are usually packaged in polyvinyl chloride or PVC which, when absorbed by the body, can have negative impacts on your hormonal levels.

You should also know that a high intake of processed red meats can have detrimental effects on your fertility. Even young men who are otherwise healthy can suffer from reduced sperm count and ejaculate volume if they eat too much red meat, according to a 2014 study.

#4 Microwave Popcorn

By itself, popcorn isn’t really all that unhealthy. However, there could be a problem with the microwave popcorn bag. Back in 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented a ban on perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA, a substance that’s used to make microwave popcorn bags grease-resistant.

What PFOA does is that it disrupts your endocrine system in such a way that your production of testosterone is negatively affected. Recently manufactured microwave popcorn bags may no longer contain PFOA, but you never know about those that were manufactured in other countries or those that were manufactured before the FDA ban.

#5 Low-Carb Meals

If you’re following a low-carb diet because you’re trying to lose weight, you should make sure that you don’t completely remove carbohydrates from your meals. Previous studies have shown that diets containing extremely low percentages of carbohydrates can result in increased cortisol levels accompanied by a reduction in testosterone levels.

If you really wish to maintain high testosterone levels while trying to lose weight, make sure you eat a balanced diet. Your meals should still contain carbohydrates, but just make sure that you eat quality carbs.

Alternatively, instead of focusing on your carbohydrate intake, focus on your fat intake instead. A low-fat diet is more beneficial in relation to your testosterone levels.

#6 All-Purpose Flour

Processed foods that contain white flour or all-purpose flour usually don’t contain a lot of nutrients like zinc. Compared to whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour typically contains a much lower concentration of zinc. And you need a lot of zinc if you want to produce more testosterone.

In addition, when you eat too much of foods made with all-purpose flour, it can increase your resistance to insulin which, in turn, can lead to diabetes. If you don’t want to develop erectile dysfunction later on, you should try to avoid foods that can make you diabetic.

#7 Commercial Cow’s Milk

Milk has always been considered healthy. In recent years, however, there has been a growing concern about the hormone content of commercial cow’s milk. Scientists have validated that commercial cow’s milk obtained from pregnant cows contain high concentrations of progesterone and estrogen.

Intake of estrogen-containing cow’s milk can suppress your gonadotropin secretion and reduce your testosterone secretion. This is problematic for men with low testosterone levels and even more so for young prepubertal boys as high estrogen levels and low testosterone levels can mess up with their sexual maturation.

#8 Licorice

Licorice is popularly used to reduce stress and soothe gastrointestinal problems. But did you know that licorice can suppress your testosterone production? That’s because licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a compound with anti-inflammatory properties.

Unfortunately, glycyrrhizin has been proven to reduce testosterone levels, in both human and animal studies. On top of that, a high intake of licorice extracts can lead to increased sodium retention and decreased potassium levels.
