What Causes Male Sexual Anorexia?

by Glenn Fitzpatrick

At some point in a man’s life, he might lose interest in sex, maybe because of struggles with body issues, certain medications, intermittent stress, and depression. But if you are really disgusted with the idea of having sex with your partner and sexual interaction increases your anxiety and stress, that is why you tend to avoid it, you may be experiencing sexual anorexia.

Sexual anorexia is a condition whereby a person dreads, fears, or avoids sexual intimacy. It is also called sexual avoidance, sexual aversion, or inhibited sexual desire. People who experience sexual anorexia fear of sexual pleasure, sexual contact, and sexually transmitted diseases. He may also manifest a self-destructive behavior for him to limit, stop, or avoid sex.

Physical causes include:

1. Hormonal imbalances in men

Men commonly experience hormonal imbalances due to aging and puberty. In fact, it was shown that men are most likely to experience hormonal imbalances than women because of the difference in the endocrine organs and cycles. Due to this condition, men manifest various symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, and reduced sex drive. Do you know that around 15 to 16 percent of men have lost interest in sex? This condition will most likely affect marriage or relationship.

2. Medication Use

man taking his medicines

Testosterone is a hormone which commonly regulates the sexual drive of men. But there are certain medications which can reduce a man’s testosterone levels. This, in turn, can lead to low libido, up to the point of sexual avoidance. For instance, beta-blockers can affect testosterone levels. These drugs are used by millions of people in the US alone. Just come to think of the percentage of men who are taking these drugs and how these affect their sexual activities. Other medications such as antidepressants, antifungal, opioid, corticosteroids, cimetidine, anabolic steroids, and radiation or chemotherapy treatments can affect ejaculation and erections.

3. Exhaustion

Exhaustion can cause chronic tiredness, sleepiness, headache, sore muscles, dizziness, moodiness, slowed reflexes, and muscle weakness. These symptoms can lead to decreased interest in sex. As mentioned earlier, one of the common reasons for lack of sexual interest is low testosterone levels. Exhaustion can reduce testosterone that is why men experience less desire for sex. And if a man is exhausted most of the time, it may make him avoid or limit the sex.

Emotional Causes include:

1. Sexual Abuse

According to studies, around 5 percent of men in the US experience sexual abuse as children. Although this percentage is lower compared to women, which is around 20 percent, this is still a substantial factor why men develop sexual anorexia. Sexually abused men find it hard to create a successful romantic relationship because they are affected by depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Other men may become addicted to sex, while others have no desire for sex. Sexual addiction and sexual anorexia are both conditions which should not be taken for granted and should be treated immediately.

2. Rape

Yes, you read it right! Our law on rape protects women against men. But do you know that men can also become victims of rape? Statistics show that over 2.78 million of men have been raped. One out of thirty-three men has been a victim of attempted or consummated rape. And that is around 3 percent of men in the US. Sexual violence is said to have long-term effects on victims. Those who experience rape show symptoms of post-traumatic disorder. Others experience depression, which eventually leads to suicide. Some commit violent crimes, while others develop sexual anorexia. And sexual anorexia could be detrimental to relationships.

3. Strict religious upbringing in sex

Religion can influence both sexual satisfaction and decision making. People who have strict religious upbringing usually gives significance to sex; for instance, the Bible says not to have sex while not yet married. People who believe this principle will most likely avoid sex because of the fear that they might violate the laws of God. Another example is the adulterous sex. Indeed, many people are already liberated about the fact of having multiple partners. But religious upbringing might influence this trend as the Bible prohibits having sex with someone other than the spouse.

4. Communication problems

Open communication is very important in all aspects of the relationship. Having open sexual communication can bring a fulfilling, emotionally safe, and pleasurable sexual experience. Communication is the key to convey your needs and wants to your partner. Although some may find it difficult or awkward, this will make partners enjoy their sex life. But the lack of communication will most likely affect the relationship. Without this, your partner won’t be able to understand your wants and needs, and vice versa. This will also lead to sexual dissatisfaction. If you are not sexually satisfied with your partner, you will most likely avoid having sex with her because, in the first place, you can’t get any sexual pleasure from her.

Conclusion

Men tend to develop sexual anorexia because they think that having intimate relationships are unsafe. To protect them from harm, they try to avoid or stop sexual intimacy. Yes, they may look self-assured, aloof, and very contained on the outside, but they are very vulnerable and insecure within. Sexual anorexia may be due to physical and emotional causes. Some of these causes are already conditions which should be treated as soon as possible. A person with sexual anorexia can only be treated if the underlying cause of the same is determined.
