Can Low Testosterone Cause Urinary Problems?

Do you often find yourself waking up at night because you feel the urge to urinate? When you have nocturia or nocturnal polyuria, it means you feel the need to go to the bathroom several times at night. It’s actually a medical condition and it’s highly associated with low testosterone levels.

Low testosterone levels, by itself, does not directly cause nocturia or even lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). However, scientists have found that the lower your T levels are, the higher your risks of developing nocturia and LUTS.

The Complex Relationship Between Low T and LUTS

Nocturia is just one of the many symptoms of LUTS. Other symptoms include frequent voiding, poor or weak urine stream, dribbling, straining during urination, painful urination, and feelings of incomplete bladder emptying.

Several factors can contribute to LUTS. For one, it’s highly prevalent among elderly men. And older men tend to have low T, as well as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. In men with BPH, the enlarged prostate can obstruct the urethra and interfere with urinary flow. This is why men with BPH often experience intermittent and weak urine stream.

testosterone blood testThe relationship between LUTS and testosterone has been examined several times through numerous studies. Low serum testosterone levels are strongly associated with frequent urination at night, as well as to lower urinary tract symptoms.

The relationship becomes more complex as nocturia results in sleep disturbances. Men who lack sleep tend to experience reduced testosterone production since the synthesis of the hormone typically happens at night during sleep.

In fact, studies have shown that testosterone levels can decrease by as much as 0.142 ng/mL for each instance of waking up to urinate. This means that the more frequently you go to the bathroom at night, the lower your testosterone levels become.

On the other hand, testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to help reduce nocturia and LUTS. In the past, testosterone supplementation was believed to cause BPH and LUTS to worsen. However, many scientists argue that this is not the case.

In recent years, numerous studies have revealed that testosterone therapy may actually have ameliorative effects on nocturia and LUTS. The positive effects of testosterone on sleep quality may also contribute to the reduction in nocturia frequency.

Is It Safe to Take Testosterone Boosters When You Have Urinary Problems?

To determine whether it’s safe for you to take testosterone boosters, you should discuss it first with your doctor. Even if studies indicate that men with LUTS may benefit from testosterone supplementation, talk to your doctor before you take any testosterone boosters, especially if you are suffering from other medical conditions.

In any case, not all doctors would always recommend testosterone replacement therapy for every case of low testosterone. If you can’t get a prescription for testosterone treatment, you may want to try taking natural testosterone boosters instead. Try the following:

  • Tribulus terrestris

Widely recognized and scientifically acknowledged for its testosterone-boosting properties, Tribulus terrestris is an herbal remedy with many benefits for men’s sexual and reproductive health.

Not only does Tribulus terrestris increase your T levels but it also boosts your libido, enhances your nitric oxide production, and improves your ability to achieve erections. On top of that, Tribulus terrestris can also help improve your semen quality.

  • Tongkat Ali

Also called Pasak Bumi or Long Jack, Tongkat Ali is another herbal remedy that’s associated with a variety of medicinal properties and health benefits. Packed with antioxidants, Tongkat Ali exhibits anti-cancer and antibacterial properties.

Plus, it’s also effective in increasing testosterone synthesis, improving spermatogenesis, and preventing penile detumescence. Popular as an aphrodisiac, Tongkat Ali is also used to increase sexual satisfaction and improve sexual stamina.

  • Horny Goat Weed

For men who are struggling with libido and erection issues, Horny Goat Weed is an excellent aphrodisiac, erection enhancer, and testosterone booster. Horny Goat Weed helps improve blood circulation through increased vasodilation, which is why it’s used to improve cardiovascular health and erection quality.

The erection-boosting effects of Horny Goat Weed are due to the PDE5 inhibitory properties of icariin, which is an antioxidant found in extracts of Horny Goat Weed. Icariin is very similar to sildenafil, but it does have other benefits such as fatigue reduction. It’s also known to have anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and fertility-enhancing properties.

  • Zinc

zinc supplementThere’s a reason why men with low T are often advised to eat zinc-rich foods. Although we only need a small amount of zinc on a daily basis, men who are low on testosterone can’t really afford to be zinc deficient.

Zinc plays a necessary role in the process of testosterone synthesis, as well as in the growth and development of spermatozoa. This means that when you’re low on zinc, both your testosterone levels and fertility will be negatively affected.

  • Fenugreek

Although many people use fenugreek as a weight loss aid, the herb is also helpful in increasing free testosterone levels. Fenugreek has inhibitory effects on both 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase. These are enzymes that convert free testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estrogen.

This means that if you want to lower your DHT levels while keeping your free testosterone levels up, you should take a natural testosterone booster that contains fenugreek. If you do, you’ll also benefit from fenugreek’s aphrodisiac effects.
