It may be normal for you to feel sexually excited, especially if there is sexual stimulation, but if it happens all the time, then maybe you are suffering from a condition called persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD), most commonly experienced by women, while called priapism in men.

PGAD for Women

PGAD is a condition that makes you feel sexually excited all the time, even if there is no sexual stimulation or activity. This condition makes you aroused even if there is no reason for you to feel that way. You will experience sexual arousals such as swelling of the vagina or an erection. If you have this condition, you will experience as if you have a constant orgasm. PGAD can make you sexually excited for hours, days, or even weeks. If this happens, then your daily activity will most likely be affected.

PGAD is most common in women. But this condition may also affect men, though it is often called as priapism. Priapism is a prolonged erection that can last for hours, even if without any sexual stimulation.

What Causes PGAD?

stressed womanAnxiety, stress, masturbation, and sexual stimulation are just a few causes that can trigger PGAD. Some people find it painful to experience severe arousal. But people with PGAD cannot clearly identify the cause of why they feel sexually excited all the time.

Experts identify stress as the cause of this disorder. This is because once the stress is alleviated, sexual arousal tends to calm. That is the reason why PGAD is sometimes considered as a psychological disorder. Other causes of this condition are hormones, veins, chemical balance after medication, and nervous system.

Furthermore, a study has shown that one of the causes of PGAD is Tarlov cysts. This is because 66.7 percent of women having symptoms of PGAD also have Tarlov cyst. Some experts believe that this condition is a response to a Tarlov cyst.

Symptoms of PGAD

If you are experiencing ongoing uncomfortable sensations around your genitals, including the labia, clitoris, perineum, vagina, and anus, you are most likely having a PGAD. These sensations are known as dysesthesia. They can include itching, burning, pins and needles, pounding, pressure, and wetness.

These symptoms lead you to feel like you will have an orgasm. These symptoms can occur even if you don’t feel any sexual desire. That is the reason why you feel sexually excited all the time, with or without sexual stimulation. And if you already have a climax, the symptoms will be alleviated, but this will return just within a few hours.

PGAD can lead to anxiety, depression, frustration, insomnia, guilt, distress, and panic attacks. People having this condition will most likely lose their interest in sexual pleasure because orgasm makes them relieve the pain rather than a pleasurable experience.

What Happens When a Woman Gets Wet?

It is normal for you to get wet, especially if you are sexually excited. From that moment, there is an increase in blood flow to your genitals, which makes your clitoris and vulva swell, as well as your vagina to lubricate. Being wet makes penetration more pleasurable and comfortable because it allows the reduction of friction as the man enters his penis.

Priapism for Men

Men with priapism experience prolonged and painful erections. This condition makes erection lasts for hours, even if without sexual stimulation. This kind of condition is not common, but it usually affects men in their 30s.

There are two kinds of priapism- ischemic or nonischemic. Ischemic priapism occurs when the blood cannot circulate from the erection chamber. On the other hand, nonischemic priapism usually occurs due to an injury.

What Causes Priapism?

It is normal to get an erection if there is physiological or physical stimulation. But if you feel sexually excited all the time, even without these mentioned stimulations, then you are most likely suffering from priapism. Erection occurs when the blood flows to the penis increases. This ends once there is no longer stimulation and the blood leaves the penis.

Priapism is usually caused by various diseases and disorders such as leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and multiple myeloma. It was shown that 42 percent of those suffering from sickle cell anemia also experience priapism.

Symptoms of Priapism

The symptoms of priapism depend on whether you are experiencing ischemic or nonischemic priapism. If you have ischemic priapism, you will experience a prolonged erection up to 4 hours, penis pain, and rigid penile shaft with a soft tip. On the other hand, the symptoms may be similar for nonischemic priapism, except for penis pain.

What Happens When a Man Gets an Erection?

As a response to sexual stimulation, you will experience sexual desire or excitement. This response is manifested when you get an erection. Erection occurs when there is an increase in blood flow through your penis. Aside from that, it will make you scrotum become tighter and sort of harder.

In the plateau stage, your penis’ head becomes wider, your penis will look deeper in color, and your testicles will grow in size. You will breathe more quickly, and your buttocks and thighs will become tighter. You will begin to feel warm as you approach orgasm.

Conclusion

It is normal to feel sexually excited if there is sexual stimulation. But if this happens to you all the time, then maybe this is not normal, and you may be suffering from persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) for women or priapism for men. PGAD and priapism is a condition which makes you feel sexually excited, even if there is no sexual stimulation or activity. If you feel sexually excited all the time, especially without sexual stimulation, you have to seek immediate help from your doctor.
