How Long Does It Take for Sperm Quality to Improve?

It’s an emotional moment when you and your partner agree that you both want to have a baby soon. But it doesn’t mean that just because you’ve agreed on it, that it will happen right away.

If your sperm quality isn’t so good, it may take several months at the least before your partner gets pregnant. Although it can take just one disease or traumatic injury to ruin your sperm quality, it takes quite some time to actually improve the quality of your spermatozoa. Here’s how you can produce healthier sperm.

How Long Does Sperm Production Take?

Producing new sperm cells from start to finish takes an average of 74 days. During the first two months, sperm stays inside the testicles to develop. After 50-60 days, the newly produced sperm then travels to the epididymis.

The epididymis is a convoluted duct that’s located behind the testis. This is where the newly produced spermatozoa are stored, and where they fully develop into maturity. Sperm cells stay in the epididymis for around two weeks until they reach maturity.

What Factors Affect Sperm Production?

So many factors can affect the quality of your sperm from the moment your germ cells differentiate to later become mature spermatozoa. Testicular temperature and testosterone levels, for example, can determine whether you’ll be producing sperm at an optimal rate or not.

Did you know that if the temperature inside your scrotum is so high, it can actually cause sperm production to completely stop? And if your testosterone levels are too low, you may still produce some spermatozoa, but most of them may not fully develop.

oxidative stress on cellsOf the several factors that can influence the health of your sperm, oxidative stress is one of the most damaging.

In fact, experts consider oxidative stress as one of the most prevalent causes of unexplained or idiopathic infertility in men.

Some of the damage to spermatozoa caused by free radicals and reactive oxygen species include lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, and sperm cytoplasm damage.

These can all result in impaired sperm function and can affect not only the morphology or motility of sperm cells but also their ability to penetrate and fertilize an egg cell.

It’s even more problematic if oxidative stress causes damage to the DNA material that’s carried by the sperm cell. Although a sperm with damaged DNA material can still fertilize an egg cell, the resulting embryo may encounter various problems during its development. Spontaneous abortion may also occur.

How is High-Quality Sperm Defined?

Sperm health is all about quantity, movement, and structure. You need a sufficient number of spermatozoa per milliliter of your semen so that you’ll have a good chance that one of your sperm cells will be able to reach the egg cell and penetrate it.

At least 15 million sperm cells should be present in one milliliter of semen in order for your sperm count to be considered normal. Although men with a lower sperm count have been able to impregnate their partner, your chances are much better when your sperm count is high.

Sperm motility is another parameter that’s measured when you have a sample of your semen analyzed. What’s important here is that your sperm cells are able to swim forward, and that’s referred to as progressive motility.

You want about 40% of your sperm to be able to move, and at least 32% of your spermatozoa should be progressively motile. If you have a low sperm motility percentage, it could take a long time before your partner conceives.

The structure, shape, and size of your spermatozoa are also important. During sperm analysis, this parameter is measured as sperm morphology. At least 4-14% of your spermatozoa should have normal size, shape, and structure.

How to Improve Your Sperm Quality

If you want to improve the health of your sperm, you need to consider all semen parameters. Sperm count is crucial in the sense that if there’s no viable sperm cell in your semen at all, pregnancy through natural means may be impossible and you may need to consider IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

ashwagandha supplement pillsIn order to increase your sperm count, supplements like Tongkat Ali, Maca, Horny Goat Weed, Ashwagandha, and Tribulus terrestris can help.

These herbs have been shown, through several scientific studies, to actually boost sperm production.

Tongkat Ali and Tribulus terrestris, in particular, are also able to increase testosterone levels, and a healthy testosterone level is definitely beneficial for sperm health since your spermatozoa depend on testosterone for their nourishment.

In addition, herbs like maca, Tongkat Ali, and Tribulus terrestris can also help increase the percentage of your sperm with normal sperm morphology and motility.

In several studies, both Tribulus terrestris and Tongkat Ali have been proven to be helpful for men who are getting treatment for idiopathic or unexplained infertility.

Aside from taking fertility-enhancing herbal supplements, regular exercise has also been shown to really benefit men with fertility problems. Increasing your intake of foods that contain a high concentration of nutrients like zinc and vitamins A, C, and E will also help a lot.

These nutrients are actually important for sperm development, and vitamins A, C, and E also act as seminal plasma antioxidants. This means that these vitamins also help protect your sperm cells from oxidative stress, thus reducing abnormal sperm morphology and preventing low sperm motility.
