Can You Still Get Pregnant with A Sperm Allergy?

Sperm allergy can make sex awkward, uncomfortable, and even dangerous. When your partner is allergic to your semen, she may experience a variety of symptoms every time she comes into contact with your semen.

Some of the symptoms associated with sperm allergy are quite mild and can be treated with over-the-counter antihistamines. However, there are cases when sperm allergy is so severe that unprotected sex is no longer an option. Find out how sperm allergy can affect a couple’s chances of getting pregnant.

Overview

Sperm allergy is considered a rare type of disease, but experts estimate that around 40,000 American women suffer from it. If a woman who has sperm allergy isn’t really trying to conceive, the condition can be easily managed by making sure that she doesn’t come into physical contact with semen.

This means that if your partner is showing allergic reactions to your semen, you will always need to wear protection whenever you make love with her. It also means that your partner needs to avoid giving you oral sex. If she does, you should do your best to avoid ejaculating inside her mouth.

Although sperm allergy imposes all sorts of limits to a couple’s sexual enjoyment, the condition does not really impair one’s fertility. However, it does present a huge challenge for couples who are trying to get on the family way.

Sperm allergy or seminal plasma hypersensitivity may develop at any time, and it can occur suddenly with a new partner or even with a long-term partner. Some women experience sperm allergy after a long period of not having sex, such as when they first have sex after giving birth.

Symptoms

Swelling, itching, and post-sex redness are the most common symptoms of mild or moderate sperm allergy.

These symptoms may be limited to the vaginal area only or in the area where contact with semen occurred. These symptoms usually occur about 30 minutes or so after exposure to semen.

However, if the allergy is severe, it can lead to anaphylaxis which can lead to death. Anaphylaxis can cause the throat or the tongue to swell. It can also result in extremely low blood pressure and shortness of breath.

Immediate treatment is necessary, which is why doctors recommend having an EpiPen ready at all times.

Treatment Options

It’s actually possible to treat sperm allergy. Intravaginal graded challenge is one of the ways by which your doctor can treat your partner’s sperm allergy. Your semen will be diluted and then an allergist will place the diluted semen into your partner’s vagina.

This is usually done at regular intervals, typically every 20 minutes or so. Your doctor will gradually increase the amount of your semen being placed in your partner’s vagina until she can tolerate your undiluted semen without showing any signs of an allergic reaction.

What’s nice about intravaginal graded challenge is that your doctor will recommend that you have sex with your partner frequently so that she can maintain her tolerance of your semen.

Your doctor may also advise your partner to take an antihistamine prior to engaging in sex. Antihistamine can prevent the symptoms of sperm allergy from flaring up even when your partner comes into contact with your semen. However, this is usually recommended only if the allergy is mild.

For couples who are not planning to get pregnant any time soon, using a condom is an easy way to manage sperm allergy. But if you’re wanting to conceive through natural means, it’s best to treat the allergy first before having unprotected sex.

If your partner’s sperm allergy persists and your doctor strongly recommends that you abstain from having sex with your partner, then you will need to consider assisted reproductive technology such as intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization.

How to Increase Your Fertility

Although sperm allergy does not make you infertile, it’s still a good idea to take steps to enhance your fertility, especially if you and your partner have been trying to conceive for some time already.

Scientists have found that natural fertility enhancers like Tongkat Ali and Tribulus terrestris are good for improving semen parameters. Both Tongkat Ali and Tribulus terrestris are known to increase sperm motility, as well as improve sperm morphology. These herbs are rich in antioxidants, and they also help improve testosterone synthesis.

When your testosterone levels improve, it usually results in improved semen parameters since testosterone provides nourishment to the sperm cells growing inside your testicles.

Aside from Tribulus terrestris and Tongkat Ali, Maca and Ashwagandha are also great options for naturally enhancing your fertility. Maca has been found to help improve sperm count and semen volume. Ashwagandha is able to help increase sperm motility, and it’s also good for sperm morphology.

zinc capsuleIf you’re going to take a supplement to enhance your fertility, make sure that you take one that has zinc.

For both testosterone and sperm production, zinc is a key nutrient. Your sperm cells won’t be able to develop normally if you’re deficient in zinc.

Zinc is necessary for the normal development and function of the sperm head, as well as for the normal attachment of the sperm tail. Without zinc, the sperm head may become misshapen or the tail may not attach properly.
