How Do You Cure A Sperm Allergy?

Post-coital itching, vaginal swelling, redness, and irritation are just some of the symptoms commonly associated with sperm allergy. However, there are many other diseases and infections that can cause similar symptoms, which is sperm allergy is often mistakenly diagnosed as something else such as yeast infection.

When sperm allergy isn’t diagnosed accurately, the condition will not be treated effectively. The problem is that sperm allergy sometimes leads to a life-threatening allergic reaction like anaphylaxis. Read on to find out how sperm allergy can be treated.

What Causes Sperm Allergy?

Allergens are substances that trigger allergic reactions. With regard to sperm allergy, the allergens are protein molecules found in the seminal fluid and not in sperm. Hence, the scientific name for sperm allergy is actually human seminal plasma hypersensitivity.

However, the condition is commonly referred to as sperm allergy. Because of this, people who are allergic to seminal fluid are often mistakenly perceived as allergic to sex.

In truth, those with sperm allergy or human seminal plasma hypersensitivity can actually still engage in sex as long as they don’t get in contact with semen.

Although most cases of sperm allergy affect women, there are also instances when men develop an allergic reaction to their own semen. For women, sperm allergy may show up right after their first unprotected sexual encounter.

However, there are also cases when women develop sperm allergy later on. Some women experience an allergic reaction to the semen of a particular sexual partner but not when they have unprotected sex with someone else.

There are also cases when wives suddenly find themselves allergic to their husband’s sperm, even though they’ve been having sex for years already.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of research about sperm allergy and because it’s a rare condition, experts have not yet fully identified all the risk factors associated with sperm allergy.

Can Sperm Allergy Be Treated?

There are several options available for treating sperm allergy. The treatment option would depend on the severity of the allergic reaction and whether it’s localized or systemic. If it’s localized, it means that symptoms such as swelling only occur in the part of the body that was actually exposed to semen. Systemic means the whole body is affected.

The quickest and easiest way to prevent flareups of sperm allergy symptoms is to completely avoid contact with semen.

This doesn’t mean that you should stop engaging in sex altogether if you have sperm allergy. Rather, it means that you should use a condom every time you engage in sexual intercourse.

If your partner is allergic to your semen, you may also want to try coitus interruptus, although this may prevent you and your partner from having a fully satisfying sexual encounter.

However, condoms and coitus interruptus really only prevent sperm allergy symptoms from appearing. In order to completely treat the allergy, your doctor may recommend procedures like desensitization and intravaginal seminal graded challenge.

When a woman with sperm allergy undergoes intravaginal seminal graded challenge, diluted amounts of her partner’s semen are placed inside the woman’s vagina. This is done repeatedly every 20 minutes or so.

The amount of semen placed inside the vagina is gradually increased until the patient is already able to tolerate her partner’s undiluted semen.

Couples who opt for an intravaginal seminal graded challenge are advised to engage in sex as frequently as every 48 hours or less. This will help the woman maintain her tolerance for her partner’s semen.

Over-the-counter antihistamine taken before you engage in any sexual activity may also be helpful in minimizing sperm allergy symptoms.

However, for women who show severe allergic reaction to semen, it would be best to have an EpiPen or automatic epinephrine injector handy. When the allergic reaction is severe, it can lead to anaphylactic shock which can be life-threatening.

How Does Sperm Allergy Affect Fertility?

Human seminal plasma hypersensitivity does not influence your fertility at all. However, if your partner is allergic to your semen, it can hamper your sexual enjoyment and prevent you from conceiving a child, especially if you two can’t have sex without using protection.

For couples who want to conceive, it’s best to have sperm allergy completely treated first before trying to have a baby. This way, you can fully enjoy unprotected sex without having to worry about your partner developing hives, rashes, and swelling after sex.

However, if the allergic reaction is so severe that unprotected sex is no longer an option, then the couple should consider assisted reproductive technology instead.

Both intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are great options since they have high success rates and they don’t require any contact with semen.

Enhancing Male Fertility

Whether you’re planning to get pregnant through natural means or you want to undergo IVF, it’s important to boost your fertility in order to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

For men, the most common fertility issues are low sperm count and poor sperm motility. Idiopathic or unexplained infertility is another common reason why men seek fertility treatment. Fortunately, several natural remedies can help.

With unexplained or idiopathic male infertility, the problem is often due to stress and the damages to sperm caused by high oxidative stress levels.

Medical conditions like obesity and diabetes increase oxidative stress levels, which is why these diseases are often linked to male infertility.

Tongkat Ali, Maca, and Ashwagandha are great natural remedies for reducing stress.

In various scientific studies, these three herbal stress-reducers have been found to effectively lower cortisol levels and improve hormonal balance. In addition, these herbs are also great as energy boosters and mood enhancers.

With regard to male fertility, studies have also shown that Ashwagandha, maca, and Tongkat Ali are helpful in increasing the percentage of progressively motile sperm and improving sperm morphology. Black maca, in particular, can significantly improve sperm count.
